Our bodies can produce some vitamins, but can not produce any mineral substances, including iron. Therefore, it can only be obtained from food. This iron falling into our body, gets absorbed into the blood circulation only about 2-10 %. Hence, to obtain the necessary amount of iron we need additional drugs.
The average daily requirement dose of iron for women is 15 mg, whereas pregnant or nursing women need 50 mg of iron per day. The pregnant woman is almost impossible to eat quantity of food needed to meet the daily allowance of iron. Even a well-balanced diet contains a total 6 mg of iron per 1000 calories.
Iron deficiency occurs in 10-50% of infants, children, adolescents, pregnant women, athletes and older women. Iron deficiency in children is manifested primarily a decrease in comprehension, concentration and coordination, or the general lowering of intelligence. Iron deficiency can cause brittle hair, cracked nails, fatigue and dizziness.
Coffee and tea lovers needed for the high dose of iron. Phosphoproteins of eggs and phytates, contained in whole wheat flour also lower amount of iron in the body.
The most useful is to take iron in chelate form. Creation of chelates is a process during which mineral substances become biologically available and as a result become better used by the body. Chelated minerals, obtained using the amino acids are absorbed in 3-10 times better than the minerals in a non-chelate, inorganic form.
Modern dietary supplements contain, besides the organic iron in the chelate form, also vitamin C and bioflavonoids, as they contribute to the resorption of chelated iron and enhance its action.
ATTENTION!
- Men who take multivitamins are in need of additional intake of iron only in the event of its acute shortage.
Dietary supplements containing iron in organic form, can be taken with vitamin E, because they do not weaken the effect of each other.
- Iron deficiency is particularly strong among people suffering from rheumatic and fungus diseases or chronic herpes. In this case, its daily intake should be increased.
- Acceptance of iron in infectious diseases is not recommended because it promotes the growth of bacteria. The body of people suffering from such diseases, can not use iron, but accumulates it. Acceptance of iron can continue only after the disappearance of fever and symptoms of the disease. Multivitamins can be received during illness, too.
- Increased iron content in the organs and tissues of the body increases the formation of free radicals, thus the need for antioxidants also increases.
Recommended dosage: children in case of the diagnosed lack of iron - under the instruction of the doctor, adults - 1 tablet daily.
Practical advice: at planning motherhood it is recommended some weeks prior to conception to accept 2 x 1 tablets in a day.
