Selenium was discovered by Jens Berzelius in 1817. Its name comes from the Greek "Selene" (white). For a long time, selenium was considered a toxic compound, but studies have shown that this element is an integral part of nutrition and effectively supports the health of the whole organism. Its natural sources are meat, offal, seafood and cereals.
Selenium is a component of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects cells and tissues from the harmful effects of free radicals. It supports the immune system, as well as is needed to produce thyroid hormones. People who adhere to a strict vegetarian diet usually lose a required amount of selenium, which may adversely affect health.
